The Chicago Board of Education Mourns the Passing of Former Board Member Michelle Morales
October 23, 2026
The Chicago Board of Education mourns the passing of Michelle Morales, a former Board member whose departure is a profound loss to Chicago. Michelle’s life work reflected a deep, unwavering commitment to the youth, families, and communities of Chicago.
Appointed to the Board in 2023, Michelle brought the essential perspective of an educator, youth advocate, and longtime community organizer. She taught at an alternative high school in Humboldt Park, served as Associate Director of the Alternative Schools Network, and led the Illinois chapter of the Mikva Challenge.
A dedicated organizer within Chicago’s Puerto Rican community, Michelle advocated for educational and economic justice and community-informed development. As President of the Woods Fund Chicago, Morales spearheaded efforts that centered around eradicating racial injustices; this deeply informed her board service.
Beyond her impressive achievements, Michelle had a magnetic presence. She had knowing eyes, was quick-witted, and maintained an excellent sense of humor. To be in her presence was to feel seen by her beauty, warmth, and spirit.
The Chicago Board of Education extends its deepest condolences to her loved ones, her colleagues at Woods Fund Chicago, and the many people across Chicago whose lives and work she touched.
